AWEX Wool Market Indicators

AWEX Market Indicators and Micron Price Guides (MPG's)

AWEX maintains a series of benchmark Australian Wool Market Indicators. These are based on fixed baskets of wool types, calculated each sale day and released via a series of subscription reports. The Indicators are economic expressions relating to the current and previous levels of the wool market.

The primary Wool Market Indicator is the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (AWEX-EMI), with support by three Regional Market Indicators (RMI-North, South and West). A series of sub-Indicators known as Micron Price Guides (MPG's) are also published for each regional sale day. All Indicators are expressed in Australian cents per clean kilogram using the following yields:

  • Merino/Crossbred Fleece Micron Price Guides (16.5 to 32.0): Schlumberger Dry Yield (1% TFM);
  • Merino Carding Indicator (MC): Australian Carbonised Yield and Scoured 17% regain Yield;
  • AWEX-EMI: 89% of the basket uses Schlumberger Dry Yield (1% TFM), the remaining uses a mix of Australian Carbonised Yield and Scoured 17% regain Yield.

Frequently Asked Questions

AWEX collects wool price data from all Australian wool auctions in Sydney, Melbourne, and Fremantle, and provides a range of wool market reports through a paid subscription service. These reports are published daily or weekly for each auction centre.

The AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) is a basket of wool types used to track the Australian wool market and is recognised as the world’s primary wool pricing benchmark. It reflects the composition of the national flock, incorporating Merino and Non-Merino breeds across Fleece, Skirtings, and Cardings. The EMI is updated after each wool auction, typically on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, for approximately 45 weeks of the year.

Wool is traded at auction on a ‘greasy’ cents-per-kilogram basis, as this is how the woolgrower is paid - covering all material in the bale, including impurities such as dust and grass seeds. Wool buyers and mills, however, are interested only in the clean fibre content after processing and therefore convert greasy prices to a clean-wool basis using the individual yields shown in the catalogue. To support clearer price comparison in our market reports, AWEX also publishes the market on a clean-price basis.

Estimates of Australian wool production are made by the Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee (funded and chaired by AWI). The Committee, of which AWEX is a member, meets three times per year to update shorn wool production and other key parameters for current and approaching seasons. AWEX provides important information in the form of various analysis and statistics.
