About the AWI Shearer & Wool Handler Training Initiative

The Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) Shearer and Wool Handler training initiative has entered its next phase with the commencement of a pilot.  The pilot will bring together shearers, contractors, woolgrowers, unions and training providers to discuss the detail of the proposed national training program.
The pilot will allow all participants to test out a range of delivery and management arrangements to ensure that AWI’s national program can be implemented to add value at the local level and complement existing delivery arrangements. Since the announcement of the pilot there has been a high level of interest from a wide range of stakeholders. The pilot program is seen as the perfect opportunity to bring all concerned parties together to work for a common outcome.

The Shearer and Wool Handler Training Initiative Pilot is designed to investigate and trial five separate elements. They are:

  1. Coaching and Training of Shearers and Wool Handlers;
  2. Training Novices through Vocational Education and Training (VET) in schools;
  3. Employment Placement Service;
  4. Group Training Organisation Feasibility Study; and
  5. Evaluation of the Pilot.
