Auction

The majority of Australian wool is bought and sold through open cry auctions.  Auctions normally occur 46 weeks of the year. Sale recess weeks include Christmas, Easter and known periods of low volume (for a centre). The schedule of Sales can be found on the Annual Wool Selling Program.

Administratively the market is divided into three geographic regions: NORTH (for wool usually sourced from NSW/QLD), SOUTH (Vic/SA/Tas/NZ) and WEST (Western Australia).

Auctions are conducted in five selling centres:  Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle, Newcastle (6 sales p.a.) and Launceston (1 sale week p.a.).

There are a series of mechanisms implemented to ensure Auctions run effectively, fairly and efficiently. Commerically AWEX Members are bound by the Business Rules and Standards of AWEX. This also includes dispute resolution et al.

The operational and rostering components are administered by the National Auction Selling Committee. The sub menus in this section describe some of the administrative mechanisms and outputs to ensure the market place is well informed. Further information about some of the key operational documents such as Wool Selling Programs, Sale Forecasts and Selling Arrangements can be found by clicking on the respective menu items on the left of this page.

For further information please call AWEX Lane Cove or each Regional office as itemised in the page.
